Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment for assaulting the current Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere on November 21, 2016, at Harambee House.

Senior Principal Magistrate Hellen Onkwani sentenced the ex-legislator without the alternative of a fine.

“The court has considered that there are many issues of violence in the country and also fact that the accused is a first offender, I note from the mitigation record that the accused is a leader who needs to be a good example to others so I proceed to sentence the accused person serve one-year imprisonment,” she said.

It is alleged that Lempurkel assaulted the current Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere by slapping her on November 21, 2016, at Harambee House.

Onkwani in her ruling said that the prosecution had done the proper investigation and found out that Lempurkel is guilty of the offence.

Lempurkel has 14 days to appeal against the ruling.

The court also dismissed the claim by Lempurkel’s lawyer that the CCTV did not capture the incident.
