Kabarak University has appointed former Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga as senior Professor of Law at the institution.

In a statement that has been released by the University, Dr Mutunga was appointed due to his reputation with a focus on democratic values and human rights.

Under the leadership of former President Mwai Kibaki, Dr Mutunga was appointed as Chief Justice of Kenya in the year 2011.

“We are pleased to announce that Hon. Dr Willy Mutunga, SC, EGH Mutunga, CJ Emeritus has been appointed Professor of Public Law by Kabarak University. Prof Mutunga is a renowned scholar of international repute and a reform activist with a focus on democratic values and human rights,” said the University.

He was the first CJ under the current Constitution and handed over the mantle to his successor David Maraga who retired in 2021.

Mutunga made history after upholding President Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidential victory in 2013 when the chief opposition leader and ODM party boss Raila Odinga filed a petition seeking to challenge the results of the general election.

Mutunga announced the decision, which was unanimous, saying the polls were free and fair.

He is a renowned lawyer skilled in constitutional reforms, mediation and the building of coalitions.

Before his new appointment at Kabarak University, Mutunga has been serving as a special envoy to the Maldives, when commonwealth secretary General since his appointment in 2016.
