President Uhuru Kenyatta has responded to the Pandora Papers leaks by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalism (ICIJ) on the wealth of top world leaders in tax havens.

In a statement by State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena on Monday, he welcomed the leaks saying they will help improve financial transparency and openness in Kenya and globally.

"That these reports will go a long way in enhancing the financial transparency and openness that we require in Kenya and around the globe. The movement of illicit funds, proceeds of crime and corruption thrive in an environment of secrecy and darkness,” he intimated.

President Kenyatta added that the Pandora Papers and the audits that follow the exposé will expose the secrecy by those officials who cannot explain the source of their assets or wealth.

"The Pandora Papers and subsequent follow up audits will lift that veil of secrecy and darkness for those who cannot explain their assets or wealth," the President added in the statement.

Uhuru, who is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, revealed that he would respond comprehensively to the details revealed by the leaks published by Washington Post and Africa Uncensored.

"My attention has been drawn to comments surrounding the Pandora Papers. Whilst I will respond comprehensively on my return from my State Visit to the Americas,” he added.

The remarks by the Head of State is viewed by pundits as targeting government officials in Kenya who have been linked to mega corruption scandals and having unexplained wealth.
