Deputy President William Ruto has hit back hard at President Uhuru Kenyatta who on Monday told him to resign from the government if he was unhappy with the way it was being run.

Ruto instead bashed Uhuru’s baby, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), which was dismissed by the Appellate Court last week, terming the BBI the most dangerous constitutional change.

“If there was a much more dangerous constitutional change it is the BBI, because it was going to roll back all the gains we had,” Ruto said.

He added, “We fought for almost 30 years against an imperial presidency. The BBI was going to install an imperial presidency in a very unprecedented way.”

The DP was speaking on Tuesday during a burial service held for Mahoo Ward MCA Ronald Hanel Sagurani in Taita Taveta County.

Ruto claimed that the BBI, passed through a referendum, would have introduced an imperial presidency which controlled the Judiciary and Legislature.

“How will you account, that the BBI was suggesting that we have a president who controls the Legislature through appointment of Members of Parliament into the Executive and controls the Judiciary using the Ombudsman?” he posed.

The DP added, “We would have an imperial presidency. Let us not lie to ourselves, let us not lie to the people. BBI was dangerous to Kenya and we thank God it failed.”

On Monday Uhuru, at a meeting with senior media editors, accepted the rejection of BBI by the court but also said he could not force his deputy to support it as he was opposed to it.

He said he did now understand Ruto was opposed to the same national unity he had preached for strongly and was the main basis of their presidential ticket in the 2013 General Election.

The Head of State further accused the DP of abandoning him and instead focusing on his 2022 presidential ambitions, bashing government projects while taking credit for successful ones.
