The proverbial 40th day of three robbers finally came after police foiled their robbery operation at the Blue Gum area in Mathare on Wednesday evening.

The three suspects identified as Elijah Githii, Kennedy Kinyanjui and Jackson Githui had earlier waylaid passerby in the area and robbed them of their valuables including mobile phones, cash and anything of value that they could get.

The trio executed their operation in broad daylight at about 4 pm in the area behind Mathare Mental Hospital.

Little did they know the Pangani based police officers who happened to be on their routine patrol were already aware of their evil and unlawful acts of thievery and were closing in on them.

The police arrived at the scene in the nick of time to find the thugs robbing a middle-aged man of his valuables and roughing him up.

When the daring thugs saw the officers fast approaching, they quickly boarded a boda boda that was on standby and made away in the opposite direction.

The police quickly fired two warning shots in the air that sent chills down the spine of the getaway boda boda rider as he lost control, forcing his passengers to disembark unceremoniously from the motorbike.

They sprawled on the road and incurred some injuries to their limbs and faces. Unfortunately for the trio, curious residents and victims of their brutality were ganging up to mete out instant justice.

Before the thugs could dust themselves off, the irate mob had come down on them with all kicks and blows. Were it not for the police officer who acted swiftly, the mob would have dispatched the gang to the next world.

Police arrested them, saving them from their impending death and recovered a firearm of some sort with the ability to fire.

They also recovered three mobile handsets and Sh13,900. The police also impounded their getaway vehicle.

Police investigation established the suspects came all the way from Thika.

The thugs are now chilling their feet in police custody as they wait to be arraigned in court to face robbery with violence charges.
