The ruling Jubilee Party’s candidate in the Kiambaa by-election, Kariri Njama, got a major boost on Thursday after all former aspirants for the seat opted to back him in the poll.

The candidates announced their decision to support Njama following a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is also the Jubilee Party Leader, at State House in Nairobi.

"All the former Kiambaa aspirants have agreed to support Kariri Njama win the Kiambaa seat," tweeted Jubilee Party on their official page on Thursday after the meeting.

The Kiambaa Constituency mini poll has been slated for next Thursday, July 15 and will see Njamaa face off with Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party candidate Njuguna Wanjiku.

The poll will see Uhuru and Ruto’s square it out for political supremacy, with the outcome expected to set the tone of the succession battle ahead of the 2022 General Election.

The DP seeks to use the by-election as a litmus test for his support in the Mt Kenya region as he seeks to replace Uhuru in next year’s election after the two fell out after the 2019 election.

The Kiambaa parliamentary seat fell vacant after MP Paul Koinange died from Covid-19 complications on March 31 while being treated at the Nairobi Hospital.
