The government is now ready to start issuing to Kenyans cards for the National Integrated Identity Management System, commonly known as Huduma Namba.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i made the announcement during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kisii county that the NIIMS process was now complete.

According to Dr Matiangi, the rollout of the Huduma Namba cards was only awaiting the parliamentary approval of the president’s nominee for Data Commissioner for appointment.

Last week President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) director of voter education Immaculate Kassait for Data Commissioner.

The Interior CS said, during the Gusii Stadium event, that the issuance process will take off as soon as the Data Commissioner is appointed and will be strictly in accordance with the law.

Matiang’i spoke as the Huduma Number was officially unveiled with the Head of State and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta being the first to receive their sample Huduma Namba cards.

Kenyatta urged Parliament to move with speed and pass laws needed for Kenyans to receive the Huduma Namba number.
