The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) says its key agents in Rurii ward, Nyandarua County, were arrested on Tuesday morning as votinging proceeded in the ward by-election.

According to UDA, Brian Mbugua and Daniel Githinji were arrested by police officers outside the Rurii Polytechnic and taken to Ol Kalou police station under an unclear circumstance.

The party linked to Deputy President William Ruto said the two were apprehended moments after their vehicle was detained and their phones confiscated by the said officers.

“UDA party agents have been harassed and intimidated by police across the ward,” said party Secretary General Veronica Maina, in a statement released on Tuesday.

The party also claimed its agents were barred from entering Mugumoini polling station and “strangers purporting to be UDA agents have taken charge.”

“It's unfortunate that 29 years after first multi-party elections and 10 years after a progressive constitution which guarantees the rights of citizens to multi-party democracy, misguided agents of state are still using police to intimidate voters,” said Veronica.

UDA further called on IEBC to deal with the alleged intimidations and come out and condemn them terming them abuse of power by the Executive.
