Kenyans will enjoy another long weekend this week, as the government has declared Friday a public holiday to facilitate nationwide observance of Eid-ul-Adha.

In an official notice issued on Tuesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated:

"IT IS notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, June 6, 2025, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Adha."

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant dates on the Islamic calendar.

It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, an act that was ultimately substituted with a ram.

This holiday is usually characterised by prayers in mosques and open fields, communal feasting, charitable donations, and the ritual sacrifice of livestock among the Muslim faithful.
