A man who police have linked to the hacking of the JamboPay client portal and the syphoning of Sh49 million was on Monday arraigned before a court in Nairobi County.

According to detectives, Joseph Momanyi managed to breach the JamboPay systems and sent the stolen Sh49,095,968 varied M-Pesa accounts, till numbers, and bank accounts.

Momanyi, who was apprehended on April 12, 2025 night at his house in Kahawa West estate in Nairobi, was on Monday arraigned before Milimani Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhumbi.

During the raid at his residence, police officers say they recovered multiple SIM cards which were registered under different names and a number of mobile phones alongside a laptop.

Inspector Nixon Ngigi, in a sworn affidavit, indicated that the suspect was arrested after following a complaint filed by WebTribe Ltd, which operates the Jambo Pay platform, whose founder and CEO is Danson Muchemi.

Ngigi says he hacked the portal on diverse dates between July 19, 2024 and July 23, 2024 after immobilizing client mobile numbers used for One-Time Password (OTP) notifications.

The sleuth told the court that an initial probe had revealed that Momanyi had recruited other persons to execute various aspects of the fraud to facilitated the Jambo Pay breach.

The Milimani court ordered that the suspected hacker be detained at the Muthaiga Police Station in Nairobi for seven days as police conclude their investigation into the matter.

Police had requested for 10 days saying the probe was complex and includes digital forensic examination on the seized mobile phones, laptops, and ascertaining the SIM card owners.

In the rejected application, detectives had also asked for time to verify Momanyi’s real identity through the National Registration Bureau as he had been arrested without an ID.

In opposing his release on bond, police argued that he was part of a bigger hacking racket and his release would immensely jeopardize the probe and efforts to arrest other suspects.

The mention of the case has been set for April 22.
