Illegal shisha joints in Nairobi came under fire over the weekend as the Ministry of Health intensified efforts to stamp out the banned substance, arresting multiple individuals and confiscating shisha pots in a citywide crackdown.
The operation, led by the Division of Drug and Substance Abuse Control within the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, was conducted in partnership with a multi-agency law enforcement team.
The Ministry confirmed that those apprehended would be arraigned in court on Monday for violating the national ban on shisha.
A statement released on Monday by Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki characterised the operation as a crucial moment in the campaign to uphold the law.
“This operation is a critical step in our ongoing efforts to enforce the national shisha ban and safeguard public health,” she said.

According to the Ministry, the crackdown is far from over.
“We wish to emphasize that this enforcement exercise is just the beginning. Operations to enforce the shisha ban will continue countrywide until this ban is upheld to the fullest,” the statement continued.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to public safety and called upon the public to play an active role in the fight against illegal shisha trade.
“The Ministry of Health remains committed to protecting the health of our citizens and will work tirelessly to eliminate violations of this ban,” the Ministry said.
Kenyans were further urged to report any ongoing illegal operations.
“We urge the public to support these efforts by reporting any illegal shisha outlets to the relevant authorities. Together, we can ensure a healthier future for our youth and all future generations.”
Shisha, a flavoured tobacco product often smoked communally, was banned in Kenya in 2017 due to its health risks and its appeal among youth.
However, enforcement has remained a challenge, particularly in urban areas where underground operations continue to thrive.
The Ministry’s latest sweep signals renewed determination to close that gap.
