Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen is in mourning after losing his grandmother, on his wife's side, who was almost clocking a century.

Murkomen announced on Twitter on Thursday that he lost Gladys Gathoni Gathenya, saying his wife was named after her hence the reason they were very close.

“Our dear grandma, Gladys Gathoni Gathenya has gone home to heaven. After 100 years of service to God & humanity, she has taken a rest,” Murkomen posted.

He added, “My wife was named after her & for that reason she called me her husband. She was such a close friend of my wife & extended the same to my family.”

The close ally of Deputy President William Ruto described the late Gathoni as strong-willed describing her long illustrious life through the four presidents who have ruled the country since independence.

“She lived through Great Depression, colonialism,2nd World War, Mau Mau uprising & the fight for independence. She saw Kenya through the Presidency of Mzee Kenyatta, Moi, Kibaki & almost completed the Jubilee administration. She was a very strong-willed woman who suffered no fools gladly,” the Jubilee senator added.

Murkomen, who is married to Gladys Wanjiru, described how he got away with taking photographs of the camera-shy grandmother who adored her great grandchildren.

“She didn’t quite like taking pictures, but I always got away with it. I would even do videos & selfies with her. She was in love with her great grandchildren & knew them by name. Thank you for everything. We will miss you dearly. Fare thee well cũcũ,” he concluded the Twitter thread.
