Police have launched an investigation after a neighbour’s drone allegedly strayed into the Karen, Nairobi home of Deputy President William Ruto on Monday afternoon.

According to Nairobi Police Commander Augustine Nthumbi, officers from DCI, NIS and ATPU are probing the matter after confiscating the drone and memory cards found in it.

Officers from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) have interrogated Briton Hind Jeremy, the drone’s 37-year-old owner, over the incident that caused panic among security agencies.

It was Ruto’s wife, Mama Rachel, who alerted the police after sighting the suspicious flying and recording device in their Karen compound on Monday at around 3pm.

Police officers visited the scene on Monday evening and also collected data from the drone’s memory cards to establish what it had recorded and the owner’s intentions.

“The officers went to the home and recovered the drone after which it was confiscated. I summoned the owner of that drone, he came to my office and our investigators took up the investigations,” said Nthumbi.

According to Jeremy’s account to police, his visiting friends were using the drone to record a video of his new home when it strayed into Ruto’s compound, and they will be grilled too.

This comes even as police have reached out to Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) to find out if the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) had a valid license.
