The Governor of Meru County Karira Mwangaza has appealed for a ceasefire with Meru County MCAs.

This comes a day after irate MCAs walked out on her during what would have been the official opening of the county assembly forcing her to give the address outside the Meru County Assembly chambers.

Kawira was speaking on Thursday during Mashujaa Day celebrations in the county when she asked the MCAs to bury the hatchet and engage with her in talks.

Kawira extended an olive branch to the MCAs and opened her doors to them while urging them to come together and work for the people of Meru.

"Let me take this opportunity to extend an olive branch to all leaders especially the Members of the County Assembly of Meru," Kawira said.

"My hand is open and my government is open for you. I ask that all leaders unclench their fists. Let's work together, let's move forward together as we make our people happy because Meru must be happy."

She also urged the MCAs to focus their energies on working with her on county projects for the benefit of Meru residents.

During Wednesday’s protest, the MCAs denied Kawira entry into the assembly but that was after a crowd of rowdy youth attacked her convoy while she tried accessing the Meru County Assembly, forcing police officers to lob tear gas to disperse them first before she could access the county assembly premises.

The MCAs accused Kawira of disregarding their demands and refusing to grace their requests to have discussions for the past two weeks.

They also said Kawira and her officers have humiliated them by demanding they be acknowledged as elected leaders.
