A 35-year-old man lost his life on Sunday morning following a confrontation with thugs who attacked his girlfriend at Winners Apartments in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

The deceased identified as Geoffrey Sigei and his girlfriend Winfred Kairuthi arrived at the apartment at around 4:30 am in two separate vehicles when armed thugs confronted them.

According to sources privy to the incident, Winfred was the first to enter the gate to their apartment before three men accosted her and began ransacking her car.

Sigei followed in almost immediately and as he was parking his car, he saw the commotion and went to rescue Winfred wielding a club.

“After the vehicles had gone past the main gate, three men forced their way inside, went straight to Winfred’s vehicle and began ransacking it,” the guard told detectives.

“As the deceased was parking his vehicle, he saw the thugs confronting Winfred and went to her aid, wielding a rungu.”

When the thugs saw Sigei advancing toward them, they quickly opened fire and shot him in the stomach and the gunshot drew the attention of police officers who were on patrol nearby.

Neighbours who also heard the commotion responded to the scene and rushed Sigei to RFH Hospital in Ruiru where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

Preliminary investigations established that Sigei and Winfred had spent the evening together at Ashaki Grill in Thome Estate and a silver Toyota Prado TX, which the assailants used as their getaway vehicle trailed them.

Crime scene detectives based at Thika visited the scene and recovered two spent cartridges of 9mm calibre.

Detectives have since launched investigations into the early morning murder and are currently following crucial leads to apprehend the thugs who killed Sigei.
