Wiper Democratic Movement has picked Ms Agnes Kavindu, the ex-wife of former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama, as its aspirant for the Machakos senatorial by-election.

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka handed Kavindu the party ticket to face off with other aspirants, including the one who will run on her former husband Muthama’s new party UDA.

Speaking at the Wiper Karen offices in Nairobi after being unveiled on Wednesday morning, Kavindu said she quit the ruling Jubilee Party with the blessings of the party leader (Uhuru).

Musyoka seems keen on milking the ugly divorce between Muthama and Kavindu to settle political scores with Muthama, who has since joined Deputy President William Ruto’s camp.

Kavindu, 64, was hitherto a member of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce while Muthama is the interim chairman of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) linked with Dr Ruto.

UDA has expressed its intention to field a candidate in the Machakos senatorial by-election.

Muthama and Kavindu are embroiled in property tussle in court after their bitter divorce and the two will have to face each other on the opposite sides during heated political campaigns.

Kavindu will face off with former minister Mutua Katuku on a Maendeleo Chap Chap party ticket even as UDA is yet to name its candidate and Jubilee Party opted to skip the race.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will clear the candidates on January 18 ahead of the March 18 mini poll.
