At least six people are feared dead and eight others seriously injured following an accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a personal car.

The accident happened on Friday morning at Kwa Majini Bridge in Yatta, Machakos County.

Machakos Police Boss Issa Mohamed confirmed the incident and said it was unfortunate that six lives were lost in the accident.

“It is unfortunate we have lost six passengers,” he said.

Mohamed said the injured individuals who sustained burns from the incident were moved to health facilities for emergency treatment.

The matatu burst into flames after colliding head-on with the personal car trapping the passengers inside.

“The collision caused a fire which trapped those trying to leave and hampered the rescue mission,” Mohamed said.

It is believed the explosion of a gas cylinder that was carried in the matatu caused the fire.
