The row between Kenyatta University and the Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) over the ownership of a 1,000 acre parcel of land has gone through the ceiling.

This comes after the Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Joseph Kinyua reportedly ordered Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina to surrender the university title deed.

Wainaina on Tuesday announced that he had left the institution alleging that he had been pushed out over the land row.

On Tuesday morning, when Wainaina addressed the staff, he told them that was probably the last time he was addressing them.

According to sources, the institution’s council has also been replaced with a team that is set to assume the running of the university.

Two days before the events, President Uhuru Kenyatta reprimanded Kenyatta University’s management for declining to offer part of the institution’s land to the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the setup of a Sh600 million regional emergency hub.

Kenyatta University has claimed the KUTRRH took the portion of land in dispute without consultation.

The VC last week said the idea of giving land to WHO was not in the best interest of Kenyatta University.

However, Uhuru said people who do not acknowledge the fact that Kenya cannot stand alone shall be dealt with effectively.

“We have individuals who are very ignorant and behave as if they have never entered a classroom… they don’t understand that Kenya has never operated in isolation. We shall deal with those individuals swiftly and very effectively,” Uhuru said.

The Kenyan government allocated 12.4 hectares with a committed fund of Sh600 million for the development of the WHO emergency hub.
