Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has distanced himself from the person mentioned in the petitions seeking to have his clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat revoked.

Sakaja denied being ‘Sakaja Koskei Sakaja’ cited in the complaints presented before the IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee by complainants and said that the individual was a complete stranger to the election for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

"The person cited as the 1st Respondent in Complaint No. 230 of 2022, one “SAKAJA KOSKEI JOHNSON” is a complete stranger to the election for the position of Governor, Nairobi City County," Sakaja said.

Four complainants Dennis Gakuu Wahome, Alex Abare Musila, Evans Katia and Timothy Ayieko are the petitioners in the Sakaja eligibility matter.

The four argue that Sakaja’s academic credentials are not genuine because he did not graduate from the Team University in Uganda as he purports.

However, the senator has dismissed the claims in an affidavit on several grounds, with one ground being that the complaints were filed outside the legal time frame.

He claims the complaints were time-barred according to Rule 8 of the Rules of Procedure on Settlement of Disputes, which states that a party to a dispute shall file their complaints in writing within 24 hours.

"The twenty-four window provided for under Rule 8 (1) of the Rules of Procedure on Settlement of Disputes [L.N 139/2012] irredeemably lapsed on 8th June," he said.

"Hence, the complaints herein are legally incompetent, fatally defective and procedurally untenable having been lodged outside the prescribed statutory timelines.”

In his affidavit, Sakaja maintains that his Bachelor of Science in Management degree from Team University is authentic and is duly recognised in both Uganda and Kenya.

"My qualifications and academic credentials are not in doubt having been affirmed through a lawful process," Sakaja said
