The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has given the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition presidential aspirant Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua the green light to contest in the August general election.


Raila and his running mate Karua, flanked by other prominent members of the Azimio coalition and enthusiastic members of the public presented their documents to the IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati on Sunday morning at the Bomas of Kenya.

Chebukati also presented Raila and Martha with a certificate of nomination.

“And I approve the nomination of Raila Odinga as a presidential candidate for the elections, slated, for 9th, August 2022,” Chebukati said,

“So, I now hereby present the certificate for registration of Raila Odinga as the Azimio party presidential candidate. 


When given the opportunity to say a few remarks, Raila expressed their confidence in the IEBC executing their mandate well and giving Kenyans a free, fair and credible elections.

“I want to say that we have confidence that the IEBC has got the capacity to conduct free and fair elections,” Raila said.

“We therefore would like to urge you to live by the script and do exactly what the people can expect of you.”

He also said their movement will conduct itself in a manner that conforms to the electoral laws.

“We want to say and I promise you that we are going to conduct ourselves as candidates and also members of our movement in a manner that conforms with the requirements of the electoral laws and the constitution of the Republic of Kenya,” Raila said.

Raila said they wanted Kenyans to freely express their will on August 9, 2022


“You want this exercise to be done also in a free manner. We want Kenyans to be able on the 9th of August, to freely express their will to speak clearly that this is what the Kenyans want,” the former premier said.
