The Parliament of Kenya is scheduled to host the 19th Edition of the National Annual Prayer on Thursday.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga are expected to attend the event which will be held at the Nairobi Safari Park Hotel.

This year’s prayer breakfast whose theme is ‘Transitions’ comes just 74 days ahead of the August general election and will be conducted by the clergy.

The move is meant to minimise politics during the event especially now that the political heat in the country is rising.

Makueni MP Dan Maanzo who is the co-chair of the event confirmed invitations were sent out to Ruto, Raila and the Chief Justice and they are expected to attend the event at their own discretion.

“We have invited everyone, the Deputy President, Mr Odinga and even the Chief Justice. It is now upon them to choose to attend or not. It is only Kalonzo that we know is not in the country and therefore will not attend but the rest we expect at Safari Park,” Maanzo said.

Apart from local leaders, Maanzo disclosed guests from other East African countries will also be in attendance, which is the reason political matters will not be discussed during the event.

“We also have guests from Uganda, Tanzania and Congo and therefore we don’t expect politics at the event. That is why even parliament will not have a major role tomorrow as the clergy will be fully in charge,” 

Since the country is headed towards an election which always polarises the nation, speakers are expected to share only messages that will foster unity and harmony.

Maanzo also said the National Prayer Breakfast will see leaders from all religious faiths come together and give keynote addresses. However, this year’s event will not have any guest speakers.

“This is a National prayer breakfast, so leaders of all denominations have been invited and they will coordinate themselves and speak in turns because we don’t have a guest speaker from outside the country this time,” Manzo said.

The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual event that brings Kenyans and friends of Kenya together to engage, interact and pray for the nation in the company of leaders from all sectors of society.
