The Azimio la Umoja Think Tank boss Makau Murua has said the attack on Raila was akin to an attempt on the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate.

Makau said that in a statement on Saturday in which he also termed the incident as an attack on peace and stability of the country.

"The despicable and savage attack in Soy on Raila Odinga, the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, is a threat to the peace and stability of Kenya. Let's call a spade what it is. The attack was akin to an attempt on his life," Makau said.

Makau said political campaigns cannot and will not be conducted in a climate of violence, fear, and intimidation.

He added that Kenya's law enforcement and security organs must be fully engaged at all levels to ensure strict adherence to our constitution and the laws of the republic to keep the peace and maintain law and order.

He appealed to the country’s security organs to hasten the investigations into the incident 

"We ask the state to leave no stone unturned in investigating the Soy attack on Mr Odinga and his entourage in order to bring the weight and full force of the law on those responsible," Makau said.

Makau noted they know what transpires following orchestrated electoral violence in the past and enemies of democracy would not be allowed to drag the country back to the past.

"We know only too painfully what has happened in the past every time electoral violence has been orchestrated in this country. We cannot allow the enemies of democracy to take us back there again," Makau said.

The spokesperson Raila Odinga Presidential campaign Secretariat said Azimio la Umoja faction expects all campaigns to be conducted peacefully and without hindrance.

He appealed to their supporters to maintain peace and abide by the law as they continue leading the way in forging a peaceful and democratic country.

"We will keenly monitor the conduct of our political opponents and ask our supporters to remain calm, keep the peace, and adhere strictly to the law. As we have, we will continue to lead the way in forging a peaceful and democratic Kenya," Makau said.
