Police have arrested a man who was seen on a video that went viral across social media, slapping a pro-Azimio woman during a UDA rally in Kisii.

The video elicited mixed reactions, with a large section charging the police with the responsibility to find and arrest the perpetrator of the violent act.

The police mounted a serious manhunt culminated in the arrest of the suspect now identified as Joash Atemba Nyagate alias Sokoro.

“Attention of the National Police Service is drawn to a disturbing and widely circulated video clip where a man is clearly seen assaulting a female during a political rally in Kisii Police in Kisii have acted on the incident and made an arrest of one male person namely Joash Atemba Nyagate a.k.a Sokoro,” the police said.

Nyagate is currently in police custody as police are still concluding investigations into the incident before preferring charges against him.

Once the investigations are complete, Nyagate will be arraigned in court.

The police have warned the public against lawlessness and breach of peace especially during the electioneering period.

They have urged Kenyans to exercise restraint and accommodate other opinions.

“NPS wishes to advise the public to exercise restraint and accommodate divergence of opinion during the electioneering period to mitigate on instances of lawlessness and breach of the peace,” the police said.
