Bank of Uganda Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile has died following a long illness.
Mutebile died while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital on Sunday morning at 72.
He was admitted to the facility on December 31, 2021, for emergency medical attention.
Mutibile had collapsed due to diabetic-related complications before being rushed to hospital.
Before his death, Mutebile frequented the hospital in recent years because of his condition.
President Uhuru Kenyatta condoled with his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni, his government and the people of Uganda following the death of Mutebile.
He eulogised Mutebile as a reformer whose tenure at the Bank of Uganda ensured stability and progress of his country and the entire region.
Mutebile was the architect of Uganda’s Economic Reform Program that restored his country from the economic slump it experienced in the 70s and 80s.
I am deeply saddened by the passing of the Bank of Uganda Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile. Mutebile was an exceptional economist; a humble servant whose acumen and perspectives on economic matters were singular.— Yoweri K Museveni (@KagutaMuseveni) January 24, 2022
