An 11-member special committee of the Senate will consider the impeachment of Nairobi governor Mike Sonko by Members of the County Assembly

The move by the Senate Business Committee, which plans the assembly’s order of business, will have to be ratified by in a plenary when senators convene a special sitting on Wednesday afternoon.

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka confirmed the Business Committee settled on trying Sonko via a special committee with city MCAs exuding confidence their case against Sonko would stick.

An impeachment motion is expected to be drafted and tabled in the Senate for adoption when Lusaka communicates the assembly decision to oust the city governor Wednesday afternoon.

This comes even as the embattled Jubilee governor’s legal team readies to defend him against the impeachment charges as he also continues to make efforts to fight for his political lifeline.

Sonko, who was impeached by MCAs last week refused to appoint a deputy after Polycarp Igathe resigned in January 2019 following irreconcilable differences with his county boss.

According to Section 32A of the County Governments Act, once a vacancy occurs in the office of county governor, an election should be held within 60 days, meaning a by-election could be looming in February if senators approve the decision by the Nairobi County Assembly.
