Seven people are confirmed to have died and scores of others seriously injured after two commuter matatus collided head on on the Mombasa-Malindi Road on Saturday night. 

The two 14-seater Passenger Service Vehicles had the tragic head-on collision at Matsangoni area at about 7:30pm on Saturday.

An unknown number of passengers have been rushed to Kilifi South Hospital in critical condition following the deadly crash.

Kilifi County Commissioner Kutswa Olaka has confirmed the accident and said rescue operations went on into Saturday night.

However, Olaka said he could not establish the exact number of casualties from the accident.

"We are on a rescue mission and moving survivors to Kilifi District hospital, though as of now we can't ascertain the number of casualties," he said after the crash.
