Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has revealed that the commission lacks power to stop politicians from engaging in early politics.

Chebukati revealed that during a meeting with the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) on Wednesday.

‘’As of now we know that early campaigns are ongoing and it’s against the Elections Act, and we hope the relevant agencies that deal with aspects of prosecution; that’s the office of the DPP, will take action against those breaking the law,” Chebukati said.

Chebukati used that meeting to urge the clergymen to help in encouraging youth to register as voters and vote in the coming elections.

Chebukati noted that the Commission will also conduct a nationwide voter registration in January next year after failing to attain its target in the just concluded mass registration.

The Chairman revealed that the Commission will start cleaning up the register, audit of the register, verification of the register in February next year.
