A policeman has been arrested for allegedly tearing a book containing signatures in support of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum in Bomet County. 

The cop identified as Peter Langat is reported to have torn the BBI book then threw it into a river at Lelekwe village in Kipreres in Bomet east.

Sub-county police boss Francis Gikeri said area assistant chief reported that as he was collecting signatures from residents a drunk Langat, who was on leave, came and requested to append his signature.

According to Gikeri, the administrator said he handed over the book only for the cop to pluck off two pages with names and signatures and throwing away the book.

The police boss said the motive of the police officer is yet to be determined.

A probe is underway and he will be charged with malicious damage to government property, obstructing a chief from executing his duties and being drunk and disorderly.

The signature collection for the BBI referendum being pushed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, is expected to close on Friday before they are submitted to electoral body iebc for confrmation.
