A section of youth at Kondele disrupted the second day of Deputy President William Ruto’s tour of the lakeside city of Kisumu on Wednesday afternoon.

Ruto, who was in Kisumu to popularize his UDA presidential bid, was at the tail end of his rally when chaos erupted as a section of youth demanded cash meant for mobilization.

The irate section of the youth pelted a section of the DP’s convoy with stones, prompting the heavy contingent of police officers to lob teargas to disperse the gathering crowds.

The two sides engaged in running battles at Kondele forcing many businesses to close and cars to speed off from the area as Ruto's team headed to their next stop in the campaign.

Chants in support of ODM leader and presidential contender Raila Odinga filled the air at the significant venue located Kisumu, which is considered the former Prime Minister's turf.

Ruto's speech during the rally was short and was amid chants from the crowds, as some sang praises for him and another chanted "Six thousand" referring to Raila's Ksh6,000 pledge to poor households should he clinch the presidency in the 2022 General Election.

Before Kondele, without incident, Ruto had addressed the public at Obote Road and Jua Kali in Kisumu Central where he asked local residents to vote for him in the forthcoming election.

He was flanked by embattled governor of Migori County Okoth Obado in his trip.
