The Betting Control and Licensing Board BCLB has banned all Kenyan radio stations from prize competitions and having lotteries on account of rampant fraud.

The BCLB Director Peter Mbugi announced the ban in a press statement on July 9, 2021.

Mbugi said that gaming activities of that kind had been abused in cases where permit holders engage radio station to set up competitions for them

He also said that the involvement of radio stations in the gaming activities has created a breeding ground for illicit activities.

"In a nutshell, this situation has turned some radio stations into betting shops while totally disregarding the watershed hours and the gaming advertisement guidelines," he stated.

Any radio stations that wished to continue with prize competitions will have to get gaming permits from the board.

The draws will be conducted by the permit holder in the presence of BCLB officials and engage radio stations for normal promotions and advertisements.
