Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP )Noordin Haji has approved the murder charge against Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa over the killing of a man during the Ganda Ward by-election in 2019.

The DPP also approved charges against her bodyguard Geoffrey Okuto Otieno.

ODM politician Reuben Katana’s uncle, Gumbao Jola, was shot dead after chaos erupted between supporters of rival ODM party factions in Ganda Ward in Malindi, Kilifi County in October 2019.

The incident happened after Jumwa stormed a meeting reportedly of agents of ODM at a house belonging to Katana, the ODM aspirant who eventually won in the by-election.

Jumwa was opposed to the meeting being held at night after the campaign period had ended even as officials from ODM maintained that the meeting was aimed at training its agents.

The MP, who switched camps from ODM leader Raila Odinga to Deputy President William Ruto, was arrested on October 16 last year at her Kakuyuni home in Malindi but was later released.

On August 28, a Mombasa Magistrate Court ordered Jumwa to surrender to Port Police Station after the DPP ordered her arrest alongside six others over a Sh57 million corruption case linked to the mismanagement of the Malindi National Government Constituency Development Fund.
