Apple has launched its long-awaited iPhone 12 smartphone confirming that it will be the first device to work on the faster 5G networks.

 

Apple also launched the new iPhone 12 Mini with a smaller 5.4-inch screen during the event streamed on Apple's social media pages.

The move to peg iPhone 12 on 5G, according to some tech experts, gives Apple a greater chance for growth since it launched the trendsetting iPhone 6 in 2014.


“5G will bring a new level of performance for downloads and uploads, higher quality video streaming, more responsive gaming, real-time interactivity and so much more," said Apple chief executive Tim Cook.

 

The revamped iPhone 12 device has sharper sides and flatter edges, but the higher-end iPhone 12 Pro models have bigger screens and a new sensor to assist with photography in low light.


Like its predecessor iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 features a 6.1 inch display but with OLED screen replacing LCD and a polished flat aluminum sides to closely resemble the iPad Pro and iPad Air.


 

Many iPhone lovers will, however, have to do without a headphone and a charger in their box when they purchase the new device as Apple seeks to reduce its impact on the environment.

 

Apple usually unveils its new iPhones in September, but this time they opted for a later date amid speculation this might have been due to the global disruption caused by Covid-19.

 

The iPhone is the second-most popular phone globally in terms of market share after Samsung.
