Renowned columnist and former editor, Daily Nation Phillip Ochieng' has passed on at the age of 82.

Ochieng died on Tuesday 27th April 2021 at around 9:00pm at Ombo Hospital in Migori County.

According to his family, Ochieng died of pneumonia while receiving treatment.

He had earlier been admitted at the Ombo Hospital in Migori and was released sometime last week.

However, his condition deteriorated and that prompted his return to the hospital before he passed on suddenly.

Ochieng had recently relocated from his house in Nkoroi, Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County to his rural home in Manyatta village, Awendo Constituency about two months back.

Ochieng was among the first beneficiaries of the student airlift to the US in 1959 organized by politician and union leaders the late Tom Mboya and other parliamentary colleagues. 

The veteran journalist will be remembered for his excellent command of the English language and unique style of writing. 

Among his literary works is the book "I Accuse The Press", an insider's perspective of the politics and media in Africa.


He also co-authored "The Kenyatta Succession" with Joseph Karimi.
