The Ministry of Health has reassured Kenyans that the recent Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China poses no immediate threat to the country.
In a statement, the Ministry urged calm while emphasising the importance of seeking medical assistance for severe respiratory symptoms.
“Currently, there is no reported increase in the expected number of patients presenting with respiratory symptoms in our health facilities,” the Ministry clarified. It further noted that HMPV, identified in 2001, is not a new virus in Kenya, having been documented as a contributor to respiratory illnesses.
HMPV is transmitted through respiratory droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces.
Its symptoms range from mild cold-like conditions to severe complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The Ministry urged the public to observe basic hygiene practices, including regular hand-washing, wearing masks when symptomatic, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
“We urge Kenyans to remain calm but vigilant. Observing basic public health practices is our collective responsibility in curbing the spread of respiratory illnesses,” it emphasised.
The ministry has advised any person experiencing severe symptoms, such as persistent high fever or difficulty breathing, to seek immediate medical attention.
Additionally, unusual cases should be reported through the Ministry’s toll-free hotline at 719.
While HMPV outbreaks typically peak during late winter and spring in temperate regions, the Ministry has assured the public that Kenya’s national public health surveillance system is on high alert to detect and manage any emerging threats.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that HMPV infections are often underdiagnosed due to their similarity to other respiratory illnesses, such as influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
The Ministry pledged to provide regular updates and maintain strict monitoring of the situation.
