A total of 1,279 more people have test positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, as the government warns that more people are being hospitalised after contracting the virus.

Speaking on Wednesday, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said the new patients were confirmed from 7,450 samples that were tested in Kenya in the last 24 hours, raising total confirmed cases in the country to 116,310.

According to Kagwe, the country’s positivity rate now stands at 17 per cent.

“Unlike before, when virtually all our cases were asymptomatic, we are seeing a steady increase in hospitalisations,” said Kagwe.

The CS also said at least 20,000 people have already received the Covid-19 vaccine since the nationwide vaccination programme was launched last week.

The Health CS has appealed to the 47 county governments to increase their Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed capacity as Kenya grapples with the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic.

He indicated that hospitals in Nairobi Country are currently overstretched hence the need for the hospitals in the counties to increase their capacity to handle serious virus cases.

Kagwe reiterated the directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta that all funerals must be carried out within 72 hours of the confirmation of deaths to limit the spread of Coronavirus.
