The Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), Davji Atellah, was injured during a protest in Nairobi on Thursday.

According to sources at the Nairobi Hospital, Atellah sustained a deep cut on the forehead, believed to be from a teargas canister.

The incident occurred as doctors were holding a peaceful protest to push for the posting of medical interns, many of whom have been waiting for placement for up to a year.

The deadline for posting, agreed upon in a previous meeting between the Ministry of Health and KMPDU, is nearing its end.

KMPDU condemned the incident, stating that Atellah was leading a peaceful march when he was injured.

"We condemn in the strongest terms the shooting of our SG Davji Atella by the police this afternoon when he was leading the Medical interns in peaceful March," the union declared.

"The doctors of Kenya have endured enough! This is the straw that breaks the camel's back."

However, the police have denied using any firearms during the protest.

Nairobi Police Boss Adamson Bungei stated, "I suspect he was injured as they were running away from police who dispersed them."

He further clarified that no officers were armed with firearms during the incident.

While the exact cause of Atellah's injury remains under investigation, the union has announced a press briefing scheduled for later in the day at the Nairobi Hospital to provide further details.
