Safaricom has introduced a new tech re-skilling programme aimed at young Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The initiative, currently in its pilot phase, offers a 23-week software engineering course at Moringa School.

In addition to technical training, the programme includes career mentorship and coaching to help participants gain the necessary skills to pursue careers in the IT sector.

Nyokabi Florence, Safaricom's Chief Human Resources Officer, stated, “As we work towards becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030, we realise that we cannot leave anyone behind. Currently, persons with disabilities make up 3.3 per cent of our workforce, and we are keen to grow this number to 3.5 per cent through such re-skilling initiatives.”

The programme builds on the success of the IT Bridge Academy, a 2022 initiative in partnership with organisations such as Sight Savers, NITA, and Accenture.

The IT Bridge Academy provided young job seekers with disabilities a chance to gain IT training and hands-on experience.

The initiative is part of Safaricom’s broader Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, aimed at integrating inclusivity into all aspects of the organisation, from recruitment and employee development to customer engagement.
