A new dawn for digital education in Kenya is taking shape as Safaricom Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Vodafone Foundation, launches a transformative Sh240 million initiative to bring cutting-edge digital skills to teachers across the country.

This ambitious program will deliver advanced Information and Communications Technology (ICT) training to educators in 35 Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), empowering them to blend technology seamlessly into their classrooms.

The programme’s official debut at Machakos Teachers Training College was marked by an engaging ceremony attended by key education stakeholders, including Education CS Julius Migos Ogamba, officials from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and a wide range of partners dedicated to educational progress.

This initiative signifies more than just the expansion of digital skills; it seeks to position Kenya’s teachers as pioneers in digital learning.

Safaricom Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu underscored the Foundation’s commitment to future-proofing education through digital capacity-building for teachers, emphasising that the new programme will have far-reaching impacts on teaching standards in Kenya.

“This programme reflects our commitment to strengthening the digital capacity of teachers across Kenya. By providing TTCs with the necessary digital tools, we are preparing future teachers to deliver high-quality education that integrates technology," Ogutu remarked.

"This investment will positively impact both teachers and learners as we work towards improved education outcomes in the digital age.”

In addition to equipping educators with these vital skills, the initiative aims to enhance the digital infrastructure in TTCs by renovating existing ICT facilities or establishing new ones where necessary.

The first wave of upgrades has already reached eight TTCs, including Machakos TTC, Eregi, Asumbi, Igoji, Kamwenja, Garissa, and Kericho.

Safaricom Foundation, recently celebrating two decades of social impact, has a remarkable legacy of over 4,000 projects reaching over 12 million Kenyans.

The Foundation’s focus on health, education, and economic empowerment aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and its unwavering commitment to progress is reflected in this new initiative.

On his part, Ogamba lauded the partnership, stressing the importance of digitally preparing teachers in alignment with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

“We commend Safaricom Foundation for this timely initiative. As the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) continues to be rolled out, integrating digital skills in our Teacher Training Colleges is crucial," Ogamba noted.

"This program will ensure that our teachers are well-prepared to deliver quality education using modern technology.”

Looking forward, the Scaling Digital Skills Programme fits into Safaricom Foundation’s expansive 2023-2026 strategy under its Citizen for the Future Project.

This ambitious plan seeks to elevate education, healthcare, and economic opportunities across the country, with projects like Ndoto Zetu, now in its sixth phase, and a seventh phase anticipated in April 2025.

As Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum becomes the educational standard, this program empowers teachers with the tools needed to meet the demands of modern classrooms, making technology a fundamental component of Kenya's education system.

This initiative signals a promising future, where digitally proficient teachers will inspire a generation of learners ready to thrive in an increasingly connected world.

By harnessing this initiative, Safaricom Foundation and its partners are setting the stage for a future-ready, digitally capable generation that will lead Kenya’s educational progress and innovation.
