A cohort of 113 exceptional young minds from across East Africa is set to embark on a transformative journey after securing full scholarships to prestigious universities worldwide.

The Equity Leadership Program (ELP) scholars, hailing from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, will be pursuing undergraduate studies in 22 countries.

The Equity Group Foundation (EGF) today celebrated these high-achieving students at a dedicated send-off ceremony, marking a significant milestone for the programme.

The scholars have collectively secured scholarships valued at a staggering Sh2.797 billion (USD 21.49 million) for their four-year undergraduate studies.

"These young leaders represent the future of Africa," declared Equity Group Foundation Executive Chairman, James Mwangi.

"They are not just students; they are agents of change equipped to address our continent's most pressing challenges."

Mwangi emphasized the pivotal role of the scholars in driving Africa’s economic growth, aligning their aspirations with the continent-wide Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP).

The ELP scholars have undergone a rigorous two-month college counseling program, honing their essay writing, university selection, and exam preparation skills.

A subsequent week-long boot camp fortified their readiness for university life and the global stage.

Garang Makech Kuol, an ELP scholar bound for Bowdoin University in the USA to study Computer Science, shared his inspiring journey from a refugee camp to academic excellence.

"The unwavering support of the Equity team has been instrumental in my success," he said.

Evelyn Wahu Gathara, another ELP scholar headed to Harvard University to study Computer Science, expressed her determination to contribute to Kenya's development.

"I want to use my knowledge to create solutions for our country," she declared.

With this year's admissions, the total number of ELP scholars attending prestigious universities on full scholarships has reached 970.

Notably, 13 students will be joining Ivy League institutions, including Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia Universities

The Equity Leadership Program, established in 1998, has a proven track record of nurturing exceptional talent.

By providing comprehensive support and mentorship, the program aims to equip young Africans with the skills and knowledge to become influential leaders.

As these promising scholars spread their wings to universities across the globe, they carry with them the hopes and aspirations of their nations.
