Equity Group Foundation Wings To Fly secondary school scholarship programme beneficiaries have clocked 60,009 after the latest cohorts were unveiled during an event held in Nairobi on Sunday.

The EGF programme awarded the 1,000 top performers in the 2023 KCPE examination who are challenged financially a comprehensive four-year secondary school scholarship each.

The new cohorts received induction at Pangani Girls’ High School for two days on Equity Group’s Academic Policy and Code of Conduct and what to expect in secondary school.

The Wings to Fly program is a partnership between Equity Group Foundation, Mastercard Foundation, supported by the German Government via KfW, USAID, UKAID among others.

The program has realized a 97 per cent average secondary school completion rate since it was established with 82 per cent of graduating students achieving university entry grades.

The scholarship beneficiaries also get pocket money, school uniforms, revision books, transportation to school, as well as scheduled mentorship and leadership training sessions.


"This initiative is proof that well-structured public-private partnerships can make significant contribution to Kenya's social and economic agenda,” said Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, in. a speech read on his behalf by Basic Education’s Director of Projects Coordination Elijah Mungai.

"This scholarship is not just a ticket to academic excellence but a gateway to your dreams. This program is about giving you an opportunity to change your circumstances,” Equity Group Foundation Executive Chairman Dr James Mwangi challenged the new cohort.

He added: “The comprehensive scholarship will take care of all that you will need to succeed in the next four years of your secondary school education.”



KfW Development Bank Country Director Oskar von Maltzan lauded the program with EGF and Education Ministry to change the lives of academic ally gifted but financially challenged youth.

“KfW has financed about 5,000 Wings to Fly scholarships for secondary schools and vocational training, to a tune of Sh4 billion of grant funds from Germany Government,” stated Maltzan.


Since inception, the program has facilitated 18,735 scholars to join university, as 8,337 got paid internships at Equity Bank and 3,454 enrolled in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.

890 Equity Leaders Program (ELP) scholars have bagged full scholarships at 201 top universities in 36 countries including Ivy League’s Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Cornell.
