Employees at the embattled Mobius Motors Kenya Limited are living in uncertainty after the company accepted a bid from Kenyan tycoon to acquire 100 per cent stake in the company.

Swala Nyeti has learnt that the company had accepted the controversial bid from a Kenyan businessman of Asian origin, who operates a popular network of medical centers in Kenya.

However, the said bid by the wealthy investor is reported to be causing jitters among the employees at Mobius Motors Kenya, who remain uncertain about the security of their jobs even as the talks continue.

Various sources at the firm told Swala Nyeti of staff concerns over the move by Mobius led by director Nicolas Guibert to pick the particular buyer over other more lucrative offers.

The local automotive pioneer had on announced its intention to be placed into liquidation following a decision made at a shareholders’ meeting held on August 5, 2024.

However, on Thursday, the firm said it had accepted a bid for the acquisition of a 100 per cent of its shares but fell short of naming the buyer with the two parties set to conclude the transaction process within 30 days.

“On 14-Aug-2024, Mobius Motors has accepted a bid for the acquisition of 100% of its shares by an undisclosed buyer. Both parties are looking to close the transaction within 30 days,” said Mobius Motors in a notice released by the firm on Thursday.

The director is also said to be assured of a board slot after the acquisition of the embattled firm, with the creditors meeting scheduled for August 15, 2024 now postponed indefinitely.

“As such, the norice is hereby given that the meeting of creditors originally scheduled to 15-Aug-2024 at 9AM at Mobius Motors Factory (Sammer Africa Mombasa/Enterprise Road Junction, Nairobi) has been postponed to a date that will be communicated in due course,” added the firm in a notice.

Our Swala Nyeti reporter has also been informed that a number of top-ranking officials in the President William Ruto administration had shown interest in acquiring the car maker and it remains unclear if any of them will manage to upstage the current favourite.
