Residents of six government estates in Nairobi's Eastlands area are facing evictions as the Ministry of Lands pushes forward with its Affordable Housing Program (AHP).
The estates, identified as Jogoo Road Phases I & II, Jamaa, Mbotela, Ahero, and Mawenzi Gardens, are slated for redevelopment to increase the availability of affordable housing options for citizens.
In a notice issued by Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, residents were informed of the need to vacate their homes by April 30th, 2024. Prior to moving, they must settle any outstanding rent arrears, utility bills, and service charges.
"As you are aware, the Government is implementing the Affordable Housing Program (AHP), which is part of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)," the notice states.
"Pursuant to this, several old estates have been identified for redevelopment in order to increase rental stock, avail houses for sale to citizens at affordable rates, and create job opportunities for the youth."

While the relocation may cause temporary disruption, the notice assures residents that they will be given priority to purchase or rent a house in the redeveloped estates once construction is complete.
