Motorists using Mombasa road can now breathe easy following completion of the roads that link Nairobi Inland Container Depot (ICD) directly to the Southern and Eastern Bypasses. 

The 3.8-kilometre road commissioned in 2018 passes through Nairobi National Park and will be used by trailers picking containers from ICD and keep them off parts of the busy Mombasa Road.

According to Transport CS James Macharia, the new link roads will improve accessibility to Mombasa road and reduce traffic congestion around Nairobi ICD and on Mombasa Road.

The road links the western entrance of the container depot and runs through the park’s inner fence before terminating in an interchange with the Southern bypass avoiding Mombasa Road.

Macharia noted that the road was crucial piece of infrastructure expected to ease the ferrying of cargo from the ICD where trailers pick their imported containers to other parts of Kenya. 

“This infrastructure will support the depot, which is part of the SGR project. It means cargo can come in and be taken out in what we call the last-mile, which is from ICD to other destinations,” the CS said.

The road, which is set to be linked to the Nairobi Expressway, was a joint project by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya Railways and executed by the China Road and Bridges Construction Corporation.
