Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecommunications and tech-driven company, says its business platform, M-Pesa Super App, now enjoys more than three million monthly users in Kenya.

Its mobile money platform M-Pesa has 42 million registered customers, 32 million active monthly customers, one million businesses and transacts Sh90 billion every single day.

This was revealed during the second M-Pesa Super App Partners’ Forum held at Michael Joseph Center, Nairobi on Thursday as the telcos updated its plans to expand the platform.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa says M-Pesa Super App’s two-sided ecosystem entails enterprise, merchant business solutions and extensive agency network to profit businesses.

"Any business or firm on M-PESA can provide services and products as a dedicated app within our M-PESA Super App, which now has more than 3 million customers using it every month," said Ndegwa.

Safaricom revealed that M-Pesa Business Super App, unveiled in 2020, has experienced exponential growth with seven per cent of Safaricom revenues coming from the platform.

Ndegwa added: "I am excited to welcome on board fellow corporates, EABL and Vivo Energy, who will be launching The Bar Ke and Shell Rewards within the M-Pesa Super App."

Ndegwa further revealed that Sh30 billion of the Hustler Fund has been transacted on the M-Pesa Super App platform with businesses in Kenya getting access to 8 million customers.

At the same time, Safaricom has 17 million customers who are using smartphones on its network, which accounts for 53 per cent of the company’s total subscriber base in Kenya.

Further, there are 297,000 active M-Pesa agents spread across the country, according to the data provided to Swala Nyeti by the largest communications company in East Africa region.

Some of the services available on the M-Pesa Super App include travel, credit, savings, clothes, bills, fundraising, school fees, rent, investment, food, entertainment and insurance.

In the last Financial Year, a total of Sh1.3 trillion was transacted on the M-Pesa platform.
