Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has been honoured with the Energy Management Compliance Certificate by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) in recognition of its proactive measures to adhere to the Energy Management Regulations of 2012.

This prestigious certification highlights KBL's commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable practices within the manufacturing sector.

To achieve compliance, KBL undertook several initiatives, including conducting an investment-grade energy audit, formulating an energy investment plan, implementing an energy management policy, providing training to its workforce, and appointing a dedicated Energy Manager to spearhead these efforts.

As a result, KBL has exceeded its targets for energy conservation, achieving significant savings of over 50 per cent in both electricity and Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) consumption, as identified in the initial audit.

During the certificate issuance ceremony, EPRA's Director General, Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria, OGW, commended KBL for its dedication to energy efficiency and emphasized the positive impact that the manufacturing sector can have on Kenya's energy consumption and the environment.

"It is encouraging to see manufacturers like KBL continue to demonstrate commitment to energy efficiency not because of the regulations but because it makes business sense," Bargoria said.

"KBL's efforts are contributing to Kenya's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) towards the Paris Agreement on climate change. Additionally, through their energy efficiency practices, they are easing the strain on our National Grid and the entire energy supply value chain."

Rosemary Mwaniki, KBL's Operation Director, emphasized the company's commitment to responsible energy management as a vital component of their sustainability strategy, Society 2030: Spirit of Progress.

"KBL understands that sustainable growth goes hand in hand with responsible energy management. Through our sustainability strategy, we are committed to accelerating a low-carbon future and improving energy use efficiency across our processes," Mwaniki said.

Expressing gratitude for the certification, Mwaniki added, "This certificate is more than just a piece of paper; it symbolizes our dedication to adhering to the Energy Regulations of 2012.

"We are humbled and inspired to continue our journey toward a sustainable future, where responsible energy management is at the core of everything we do. We remain committed to investing in innovative technologies, sustainable practices, and community engagement to reduce our carbon footprint and make a positive impact on our planet," she said.

KBL's outstanding performance in energy efficiency has garnered several accolades, including the Overall Energy Management Awards in 2019 and 2022, organized by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers.

One of the notable achievements of KBL is the launch of their Biomass Plants in 2022, solidifying their position as a trailblazer and leader in environmental stewardship and conservation.

The installation of four biomass boilers in the Kisumu and Tusker plants is projected to reduce KBL's carbon emissions by an impressive 95 per cent, equivalent to approximately 34,000 tonnes per year.

With the receipt of the Energy Management Compliance Certificate and their ongoing commitment to sustainability, KBL sets a commendable example for other companies in the manufacturing sector.

By actively incorporating energy efficiency measures into its operations, KBL not only contributes to national goals but also strengthens its position as an industry leader dedicated to a greener and more sustainable future.
