Safaricom has confirmed the appointment of Fawzia Ali as the Chief Consumer Business Officer with her appointment taking effect from March 15, 2023.

Fawzia had held the position albeit in an acting capacity since July 2022 and Safaricom says she has provided “exemplary leadership and inspiration to the team” during the period.

She will continue leading the Consumer Business Mission and strategic objectives and growing the market share and consumer solutions through product development, digital CVM, terminals strategy and customer insights.

She has more than 20 years of experience in finance, sales and commercial and has a deep understanding of the telcos market as well as consumer trends and economic landscape.

Fawzia joined Safaricom in 2007 as a Senior Manager, Reporting, Accounts Receivable and M-Pesa and has grown through the ranks in different leadership roles during that period.

At the largest telcos in Kenya, she served as the Head of Consumer Planning and Pricing within Finance, then took up a sales role as the Coast Head of Regional Sales & Operations.

She later relocated to commercial where she became the Head of Consumer Segments in 2018 before she was appointed the Head of Digital Products and Services in 2019.

“Following our transition into Agile, Fawzia has been one of the champions at leadership level, and in October 2021, she was appointed the Mobile Data Tribe Lead, a role she played with distinction, achieving double-digit growth during the last financial year,” said Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa on her confirmation.


Before joining Safaricom, Fawzia worked with Unilever in Kenya and Uganda.

Ndegwa says Fawzia is enthusiastic about women empowerment and serving communities.

“This has seen her serve as a Safaricom Foundation Trustee from 2015 to 2022, and she also mentors female colleagues as part of our Women in Leadership program,” he noted.

Fawzia holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of Nairobi and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

She is also a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya and has also attended multiple leadership programs and is a Certified Coach.
