Listed superfoods grower and exporter Kakuzi has partnered with Chinese importer of fresh fruits and vegetables, Dalian Yidu Group, in an effort to double its avocado exports to China.

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) listed firm hosted a team of top Dalian Yidu officers at its Makuyu, Murang'a County, orchards and packhouse in their three-day acquaintance visit.

Speaking at the weekend tour, Kakuzi Managing Director Chris Flowers said the company plans to boost its exports to China when the harvest season commences in late March.

Flowers says the listed company has heavily invested in compliance measures to conform with the strict demands of the Chinese market, including tree-to-plate traceability protocols.

Kakuzi has already poured Sh120 million into the expansion of its 927-hectare Avocado orchards by 60 hectares to fulfill the growing international demand for quality superfoods.

“The visit by the team from Dalian Yidu underscores the importance of quality management systems as such buyers undertake rigorous evaluations to enable them to deliver nothing but the best to their discerning customers,” said Flowers.

On his part, Dalian Yidu Group Business Executive Laura Xu confirmed Kakuzi's production and quality management processes aligned with the Chinese firm's supply chain standards.

“Dalian Yidu is proud to be associated with a quality-conscious Kenyan grower such as Kakuzi, producing quality Hass Avocados which are in very high demand in China,” said Xu.

She added, “Dalian Yidu has developed formidable international sourcing, cold-chain and related logistical management structure for its fruit and vegetable business."

The Dalian Yidu Group has been importing fresh fruit since 1988 in its operating hub in Northeastern China and has created good relationships with leading global fruit suppliers.

The Chinese company’s main source markets for fresh fruit has predominantly been US, Chile, South Africa, South Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

The business scope also covers logistics, finance and trade with its logistics network covering all major ports across China including Dalian Port and the Shenyang Distribution Center to cover Northeast China; Zhengzhou Airport and Distribution Center to cover Central China; and Guangzhou Distribution Center to cover South China.
