Bamburi Cement has encouraged local participation in the seventh edition of Holcim Awards Competition for sustainable construction.

The edition of Holcim Awards was sponsored and launched by the Holcim Foundation, a global independent non-profit arm of the Holcim Group, to the tune of Sh124.9 million.

The award celebrates sustainable design and also fetes and promotes building initiatives that combine environmentally friendly designs and building with architectural excellence.

It targets firms and professionals from Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and North America with entries to be accepted from February 6 to March 30, 2023.

Each region is expected to get a portion of the Sh24.9 million that is scheduled to be shared among the Holcim Awards’ Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Acknowledgement prize recipients.

Bamburi Cement Managing Director Seddiq Hassani has urged local construction firms to join the awards to promote their brands globally and stage their pledge to green building.

“Participation in this award scheme is the construction sector’s assurance to innovative building with less to zero harm on the environment on the back of increasing pressure from the government and private sector to minimize our environmental impact,” said Hassani.


Sustainable construction gives priority to using recyclable and renewable building material, minimizing energy consumption as well as waste production for an improved environment.

The Awards targets architects, planners, engineers, project owners among others to show sustainable responses to technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues.

The construction projects which are eligible for the awards entries can be at any stage of completion including; completed design, under construction and completed construction.


The winners will be unveiled on November 18 at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in Italy, with most of the sixth edition winning projects in 2022 coming from Asia Pacific and Middle East Africa regions.

The Holcim Awards have received a total of 30,000 entries from across 130 countries globally since it was established in 2003.
