Glovo and Nairobi County have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in an effort to empower businesses in the city to enhance social guarantees and safety of couriers.

The deal between Glovo and Nairobi County will enable the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nairobi and promote achievement of the county’s sustainability goals.

The MOU signed between Governor Johnson Sakaja and Glovo Kenya General Manager Caroline Mutuku was witnessed by Spanish Ambassador Cristina Diaz and Glovo Global Director for Government Relations William Benthall.

“We are proud to partner with the County of Nairobi to support local businesses and further enhance the benefits and safety of couriers in the region - matters that have always been a key priority for Glovo,” said Mutuku.

She added, “Together, we can create a brighter future for the community and bring dignity to the courier service.”

On his part, Sakaja noted that the partnership with Glovo would deliver safety training and e-learning to up to 1,500 Glovo riders.

“We have a meeting of minds with Glovo and the Spanish Ambassador on the need for dignified and safe work,” said Sakaja.

He added, “Most SMEs do not last beyond three years due to limited access to basic business training such as financial planning, bookkeeping, and growth, and it is great that Glovo is looking to close this gap through training which will ensure that SMEs succeed in the digital economy.”

Diaz lauded the partnership saying it will see Spain extend business and impact to Nairobi.

“I very much welcome the partnership between Glovo and Nairobi City County, and the work they are doing to connect the digital economy to the informal sector as well as SMES,” she said.

The memorandum covers support for SMEs, enhancing social rights for couriers as well as promoting Nairobi City County’s sustainable development goals in the delivery sector.

Glovo recently launched Glovo Local, a toolkit to assist small and medium restaurants and retail stores to digitize their business while enhancing their presence on online channels.
