Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday announced plan by the government to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Uganda via Malaba.

Murkomen said it was critical for the SGR project that was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta to extend from Suswa in Narok County through Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu.

“There is no need for the railway to be taken to the bush. We will take it to the city of Nakuru, Eldoret and then to Kisumu and thereafter connect it to Uganda,” said Murkomen.

The CS noted that extension of the SGR line to Kisumu and beyond will enhance transportation of goods and in the process reduce congestion on Kenyan roads.

The Roads and Transport CS was speaking at the Kenya Training Institute (RTI) graduation ceremony in South B estate, Nairobi.

At the event, he challenged the Kenya Railways management to give priority to the fresh graduates when hiring staff to fill the 5,000 current job vacancies at the revived institution.


Murkomen pledged the government would revive old abandoned wagons and build new ones in its efforts to create more jobs in the various departments across Kenya Railways.

“Old train carriages will be repaired and new ones will be sought to strengthen the transport sector in the country. In the 5,000 available jobs, give the first priority to those who have qualified and graduated today in this event," the CS added.
